To help understand the development of the settlement in Sway a figure ground image was produced.

Using Kevin Lynch's analysis of the city, an image of Sway was created by highlighting elements - paths, edges, nodes, landmarks and districts.

Closer inspection of the village in Sway shows that the majority of the community facilities are located to the south of the railway line. This area is the village centre.

The village centre with the majority of community facilities is to the south of the railway line, however, the most populated area in Sway is to the north where there are few community facilities.

Using descriptions of Sway given by the residents two word clouds were formed. To the right are the positives of living in Sway, and to the left are the negatives.

These images are a depiction of the perceived themes in Sway, comprising of the link between age and loneliness in the village and how the use of a garden could help to bring life to the centre of the village, whilst also touching upon previous work carried out in Sway which looked at views and framing.

By looking at the 2011 Census statistics it can be seen that the majority of the population in Sway, nearly 40% (1,375 people), is over the age of 60. The minority of people in the village, 25% (854 people), is under the age of 30. This formalises observations made previously that the majority of the population is aged.

A previous project looked at how the garden at ArtSway could be used as a meeting point in the village for the different generations, mainly the young and the old.
